How to Apply for the LTR Visa

While it is possible to apply independently, the process can be complex, requiring precise documentation tailored to each applicant’s situation.

Step-By-Step Process

Applying for the LTR Visa involves multiple steps, documentation requirements, and communication with the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility

Before applying, you must determine which LTR Visa category you qualify for:

  • Wealthy Global Citizen
  • Wealthy Pensioner
  • Work-from-Thailand Professional
  • Highly-Skilled Professional

Each category has specific financial and employment requirements, so ensuring you meet the criteria is the first crucial step.

The BOI requires a range of financial, employment, and personal documents to verify your eligibility. While the exact list depends on your specific case, applicants typically need:

  • Valid passport with at least six months remaining.
  • Proof of income (salary slips, tax documents, pension statements, etc.).
  • Financial records (bank statements, investment proof, or business ownership documents).
  • Health insurance policy covering at least $50,000.
  • Employment verification or business registration (if applicable).

Important: The BOI has strict requirements regarding how documents must be submitted, translated, and certified. Ensuring everything is correct from the start is essential to avoid delays or rejection.

Applications must be submitted through the BOI’s official online platform (ltr.boi.go.th).

The process involves:

  1. Creating an account and filling out the application form.
  2. Uploading required documents based on your visa category.
  3. Waiting for qualification approval (approximately 20 business days if there are no addiotional questions to address).

After receiving your qualification endorsement, you have 60 days to get your visa stamped. You can do this at:

  • A Thai embassy or consulate in your home country.
  • The One Stop Service Center in Bangkok (for those already in Thailand).

You will also be required to pay the processing fee of 50,000 THB per applicant once the visa is approved.

After obtaining the LTR visa in your passport, the main visa holders and their dependents can apply for a digital work permit with the Labor Department under the BOI recognition.

Note: Holders of the Work-From-Thailand Professionals  and their dependents are not allowed to have the work permit.

  • Initial qualification approval: ~20 business days
  • Visa issuance: ~1-2 weeks after qualification endorsement
  • LTR Visa fee: 50,000 THB per person

While this guide outlines the steps, many applicants quickly realize that dealing directly with the BOI, understanding document requirements for their specific case, and ensuring everything is submitted correctly can be overwhelming. Even minor mistakes can lead to delays, rejections, or costly reapplications.

👉 That’s where VisaVow comes in. We simplify the entire process, handle the paperwork for you, and ensure a smooth, stress-free application. Instead of spending hours navigating complex requirements, let us handle it so you can focus on preparing for your new life in Thailand.

Challenges of Applying for the LTR Visa on Your Own

Hidden Complications That Can Cause Delays, Rejections, and Unnecessary Stress.

Many applicants believe that if they meet the requirements, submitting the LTR Visa application should be straightforward. However, the reality is very different. The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has strict criteria, complex documentation requirements, and a review process that can be difficult to navigate—especially without expert guidance.

Here’s why many self-applied LTR Visa applications face delays or rejections:

The BOI May Not Fully Understand Your Documents

The BOI processes applications from around the world, handling a wide range of documents, including foreign bank statements, tax records, and employment documents. To facilitate a smooth review, it’s important to present your documents clearly, ensuring key details are easy to verify.

We Bring Clarity

A professional who knows how the BOI works helps bridge this gap by summarizing your documents clearly, ensuring that the BOI knows exactly what to look at and how it meets their requirements.

Communication with the BOI Can Be a Challenge

Many applicants struggle to understand exactly what the BOI wants when they request additional information. Replies from the BOI can be vague, unclear, or in Thai, leaving applicants unsure about what changes need to be made.

We Have Understanding

A professional acts as a middleman, ensuring that applicants understand what’s required and that responses to the BOI are clear, accurate, and properly formatted.

Document Preparation is More Complex Than It Seems

While the general list of required documents is available online, the specific details depend on the applicant’s unique case. Factors such as where your income comes from, the type of business you own or work for, how your assets are structured, whether your documents require notarization or translation, etc...

We Bring Accuracy

Details matter—and misunderstanding them often leads to rejections. Experts know exactly which documents to submit and how they should be formatted to avoid unnecessary delays.

There Are More Steps Than Most People Realize

At first glance, the application process seems simple, but in reality, many additional details need to be handled correctly: Formatting financial proof in the way the BOI accepts, ensuring investments meet the right qualifications, getting employer verification that meets Thai requirements, correctly applying for the visa after qualification endorsement, etc

We Bring Knowledge

Most applicants who do it themselves believe their applications are solid, but in reality, they often don’t meet what the BOI actually wanted. Having an expert ensures your application is prepared correctly from the start, eliminating unnecessary risks and mistakes.

A Process That’s Best Handled With Expert Help

Even small errors or missing details can lead to rejection, forcing you to start over. Instead of going through the stress of navigating these challenges alone, many applicants find it easier to have a professional guide them through the process, communicate with the BOI, and ensure everything is in perfect order. VisaVow can handle all the complications for you—ensuring a smooth, stress-free application. Contact us today and let us take care of the details!

Arriving At the Immigration Office Completely Underdressed

I engaged Boyd to assist me in obtaining my LTR visa. Initially, I considered going through the application process on my own, but I didn’t want to take any chances. Since the agency fee is due only after the visa has been approved, I decided that engaging Boyd was the safer option, and I have not regretted my decision. Boyd has proven to be extremely professional, responsive and clear in guiding me through the entire application process. Any upcoming issues were addressed promptly and to my fullest satisfaction.

Also, his colleague, who assisted me on the day of the visa issuance in Bangkok, was incredibly helpful. It turned out that I arrived at the Immigration Office completely underdressed, and she did not hesitate to take me on an ad hoc shopping tour through Bangkok. We returned two hours late for our appointment, but adequately dressed. She had made sure that I could still pick up the visa right after our return – despite the delay. She also demonstrated great patience and empathy during our shopping tour and turned out to be an excellent fashion advisor. I can highly recommend Boyd and his team for anyone applying for an LTR visa. It has been an excellent experience throughout the entire process.

Complicated Bureaucratic Process

Since I have been spending a lot of my time in Thailand for many years, I needed help with the very complicated and bureaucratic process of applying for the LTR visa. The cost of the service only applies if the LTR visa application is successfully completed. That is extremely fair! The support provided was very professional and committed. Khun Boyd is very friendly, competent and he never lost patience; He always answered my questions within a very short time. I can’t imagine how I would have managed all this bureaucracy on my own in such a short time without the support of Khun Boyd. Thank you Khun Boyd for all your patience and professionalism.

Top Caliber Service Delivery

As I reside in BKK I was hesitant as they’re based in Chiang Mai—my doubts & concerns, indeed, were misguided.

Though the entire application process with the BoI is cumbersome (IMHO that organization is behind-the-times & naive about certain, very common financial practices outside of TH), this was the right decision to guide me through the process—to a successful conclusion.

I can’t imagine now, trying to navigate the bureaucratic process & deal directly with any BoI follow-up queries on my own—this is a specialist firm & it was well worth paying for their experience, knowledge & network.

Working with K Boyd was terrific—besides being competent, he has effective communication skills and an outstanding, positive professional attitude. K Boyd got his part of the job done without too much drama, & was highly responsive, flexible, thorough, and courteous—an outstanding professional contact for any client.

Assuredly I’ll reach out again when it’s time to affix a visa to a new passport, and renew the LTR visa for the second 5-year term.

Without hesitation I’d recommend the service for assistance with the LTR visa application process—even if you’re located in BKK.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are questions we often receive from people who are looking for a long term visa in Thailand, and the answers we give them. If you have other questions that are not answered here and throughout this page, please send us a message and we’ll happily answer.

What happens if my application doesn’t get approved?
If your LTR Visa application is rejected, you can reapply after correcting any issues. Most rejections happen because the submitted documents don’t clearly meet the BOI’s expectations, even if the applicant believes they do. VisaVow minimizes this risk by thoroughly reviewing your case, ensuring your documents are correctly prepared, and clearly presenting your qualifications in a way that makes approval more likely.

It depends on your goals. The LTR Visa is ideal for those who qualify through income, investments, or professional expertise—and it allows you to legally work in Thailand. The Elite Visa is a pay-to-stay membership program that offers convenience but doesn’t allow work and has no eligibility requirements. If you qualify for the LTR Visa, it offers stronger long-term benefits. VisaVow can help you choose the right path based on your situation.

Unfortunately, Thai law currently does not recognize same-sex marriages or partnerships for immigration purposes. This means same-sex partners cannot be processed as official dependents under the LTR Visa. However, both partners may apply independently if each qualifies under an eligible category. VisaVow can advise on the best strategy in these cases.
Yes. If your current visa is close to expiring, VisaVow can help you obtain a short-term visa or extension to stay legally in Thailand while your LTR application is under review. This ensures you don’t have to leave the country or interrupt your plans during the process.

VisaVow is a private agency founded in 2025 by former team members of Star Visa (a licensed agency). With over 16 years of experience in the visa and relocation industry, we’ve handled hundreds of cases and built strong working relationships with Thai immigration officers. While we are not a government agency or law firm, we are in the process of acquiring our own license and provide end-to-end assistance that’s often faster and more personal than law firms or larger agencies.

Not at all. The LTR Visa process is administrative, not legal—so hiring a lawyer doesn’t give you any special advantage. What matters is how well your case is understood, documented, and communicated to the BOI. Law firms may add legal fees without providing extra value in this specific context. VisaVow focuses purely on results, with a process built around real-world experience and a deep understanding of how to get applications approved.
Our service fee depends on the complexity of your case and the support you need, but we always keep it transparent and fair. You’ll also need to pay the BOI’s official LTR Visa fee of 50,000 THB per person. We offer a free consultation to evaluate your situation and provide a quote with no obligation.

Once your visa is approved and stamped, VisaVow continues to assist you. We can help with post-visa steps like opening a Thai bank account, getting a driver’s license, registering your address, or even buying property. You’ll also have the opportunity to connect with other LTR holders in our network if you’d like to build a community in Thailand.

We recommend starting at least 2 months before your current visa expires. The LTR application involves several steps and coordination with the BOI, which can take time. If you’re already close to your expiration date, VisaVow can help you secure a short-term visa or extension while the LTR is being processed.
